WinMerge comes with some filters to normalize irrelevant differencesīetween files so this issue can be worked around (though the filters do prevent these file-types being merged). With CVSNT I’ve used WinMerge for showing differences. I have come fairly recently to Subversion and TortoiseSvn and TortoieMerge, having used CVSNT/CVS Suite for many years. On looking at XML files in TortoiseMerge I am seeing these irrelevant differences and it is making it very difficult to spot real changes, either to plan my commit, or to do a merge. Two XML files might appear from a straightforward text diff to be quite different, but to an XML-aware differencer I usually turn off all the options under "Unimportant Text" such as leading whitespace, case, line endings, etcetera.When differencing some file-types, eg XML, whitespace and some details of the syntax don’t actually mean a significant difference.
Use the little scales icon (or the Session | Comparison Control menu) to switch the comparison type to Size and CRC.

I've mentioned Beyond Compare before, but even a year later, few developers seem to know about it. DOM and it allways writes the entire file in one line, making it virtually impossible to compare different. xml files which has been produced by Microsofts XML. I wrote it because I need to compare a large number of. This amazing little folder and file differencing tool has earned its spot in my core toolset a dozen times over. This is a plugin to show and easily compare XML files in. It's a shame that Beyond Compare isn't listed in more "favorite tool" lists.
